South Australia has a long tradition of law reform.
In its early days, the colony was responsible for a number of legal
innovations that have spread across Australia, and, in some cases, the
world. Dr Greg Taylor, a senior lecturer in law at Monash University,
examines the origins and effects on the law of: (1) the Torrens system
of lands title registration; (2) the recognition of Aboriginal
customary law at the urging of a grand jury; (3) associations
incorporation legislation; (4) a statute permitting accused people to
give evidence; (5) legislation permitting people to sue governments;
and (6) an important procedural reform.
