Privacy Act reforms: from the IPPs to the APPs

Seminar description  This seminar provides a detailed overview of proposed changes to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) following the release of the Government’s exposure draft legislation (on 24 June 2010) setting out the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) which are to replace the public sector Information Privacy Principles (IPPs).

The seminar will:
·    provide an overview of the proposed APPs;
·    conduct a gap analysis between the APPs and IPPs identifying:
   - APP obligations that are the same as, or similar to, existing IPP obligations;
   - new obligations under the APPs;
·    assess the impact of the new obligations;
·    provide insight into how the new obligations may apply in practice;
·    provide an overview of other proposed changes to the Act.

The seminars will be of interest to practitioners and privacy contact officers advising on the scope and impact of the proposed changes or preparing submissions during the public consultation period (materials can be ordered ahead of the seminar – tick the box under "Request delivery of seminar materials prior to seminar" on the registration form).

Seminar materials  Attendees will receive a bound handbook containing:
·    seminar materials; and
·    detailed commentary regarding the scope and impact of each proposed APP.

Presenter  Jeremy Douglas-Stewart is a specialist privacy lawyer and Principal Consultant at Privacy Law Consulting Australia. Jeremy has published extensively in the field of privacy laws (and is author of the forthcoming Australian Privacy Law Handbook looseleaf service for private and public sectors).  He is a regular presenter of privacy training workshops and seminars to businesses and government agencies. Jeremy was a member of the Privacy Commissioner's Consultative Group during her review of the Privacy Act in 2004/05 and of the Australian Law Reform Commission's Privacy Principles Roundtable in 2007.
